Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton

I kept hearing about this book on YouTube and kept seeing references on Tumblr. I borrowed it. I read it. It was fun.

Hark! A Vagrant is composed of multiple comic strips about literary things, historic things, or just randomness! It’s not a spectacular achievement lavished with profound thoughts — it’s just really really fun. Most effectively read if you get at least 60-75% of the references.

For example, the strip above is from The Yellow Wallpaper, a feminist short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Knowing the content of the story, the cartoons are pretty funny. Now on top of that, Kate Beaton is being cheeky, and the title of the strip is “Either the wallpaper goes or I do”, which is a reference to Oscar Wilde’s famous last words (although no one really knows if he actually said them. Like, when famous people are on their deathbed, is there a special person who arrives to record their last words, or what? I don’t get it.).

So there we have it. Two wallpapers and a woman.

Watch this for more comics.
